On 23rd March 2018, GRL Tanzania Limited (GRL) officially handed over a new Teacher’s House to the Kitete Village Council on behalf of the community. The handing over ceremony was officiated by Mr. Emanuel Ndangalasi the ward counsellor for Uchindile, and GRL was represented by Victor Kimey, Rose Kalinga and Abel Busali.

The house was constructed at Kitete Primary School, which is located in Kitete Village, Kilombero District, has 40 pupils (boys and Girls). The school has 3 teachers, and this project (built by GRL) is currently the only dedicated housing for teachers in the village. The community have faced challenges getting teachers, due to them being unable to find accommodation around village. As such, considering the importance of education, the villagers through the Village Assembly (community meeting), decided to address this challenge by constructing a new house for a teacher. The community therefore forwarded a formal request to GRL to support the construction. Construction started in December 2017 and was completed in Feb 2018.

The Village Council, on behalf of the community shall oversee proper use as well as operation and maintenance. The direct costs incurred for this community project amounted to Tanzanian Shillings 30,861,748/=. The community contributed man power by making bricks for foundation and levelling the construction site. They also provided accommodation for the contractor, as well as storage and protection of the construction materials. The project was implemented as part of the company’s long-term Community Development Plan and efforts to support socio-economic development of communities surrounding plantations.

GRL is committed to helping to ensure the development of its local communities. As such, it will continue to collaborate closely with Kilombero District Council and the communities surrounding its plantations to support implementation of community development projects.
