Mabaoni (Tanzania) Village Hall and Offices handed over to the Community 30/06/15

30 June 2015

Green Resources handed over the Mabaoni Village Office and Community Hall (formally Makungu Village), to the Village Council on the 19th June 2015. The ceremony was headed by the Mufindi District Executive Director, Ms Saada Malunde.

The village office and community hall was built as part of the long term GRL Community Development Plan, as part of its commitment to ensure positive socio-economic development in areas where it has invested. Construction commenced in October 2014, and was supervised on behalf of GRL by the Non-Governmental-Organisation ‘Southern Highlands Participatory Organization – SHIPO’ of Njombe, Tanzania.

The building has a hall with capacity to seat 200 people at various functions including meetings, seminars and training. It also has four office rooms, a prison cell and a store. The community participated in providing labour and are now taking full responsibility to ensure proper use, as well as operation and maintenance. The direct cost of the building was TSh 66 million (c. US $32,000), and significant indirect costs were also incurred. The building was constructed based on Government drawings, and was completed in March 2015. It is the 5th Village Building of this kind built by Green Resources in Tanzania, the others being in the villages of Chogo and Idete in Mufindi District, and Kitete and Uchindile in Kilombero District.

GRL will continue to collaborate closely with Mufindi and Kilombero District Councils and the communities surrounding our plantations to support implementation of further community development projects. The company believes that these development projects contribute towards improvement of the quality of life of the local populations.
