On 10th March 2016, Green Resources Ltd officially handed over to Idete Village Council a Duplex Teachers’ House constructed at Igenge Primary School. The handing over ceremony was officiated by Mr. Hatibu Bwashehe (Mufindi District Community Development Officer) on behalf of the Mufindi District Executive Director. Igenge Primary School has 550 pupils of which 291 are girls and 259 boys. The school has 14 teachers and the number is expected to rise to 20 next year. Currently there are 10 teachers’ houses, and the rest have to rent accommodation in the village, which is a challenge, due to a lack of good quality houses available for rent.

By ensuring that teachers have a comfortable place to stay, it is more likely they will stay to teach. Having assessed the lack of adequate housing, and considering the importance of education, the villagers, through the Village Assembly (Community Meeting), decided on the need to construct new houses for teachers. They forwarded a formal request to Green Resources Ltd to support construction of a Duplex Teachers’ House that will benefit the school and local community. The Village Council, on behalf of the community shall oversee proper use as well as operation and maintenance.

Construction of the house, supervised by the Southern Highlands Participatory Organization (SHIPO), a Non-Governmental Organization, was completed in February 2016. The direct costs incurred for this community project amounted to Tanzanian Shillings 53.1million (approx. USD $25,300). The project was implemented as part of the company’s long-term Community Development Plan and efforts to support socio-economic development of communities surrounding its plantations. Green Resources Ltd will continue to collaborate closely with Mufindi and Kilombero District Councils and the communities surrounding our plantations in supporting better education for the benefit of its communities and the nation.
